YOUTH CORPS MEMBER RENOVATES POLICE STATION IN CALABAR


A member of the NYSC, Ms Amarachi Kalu, in Calabar on Tuesday, handed over the Uwanse Police Station she renovated  to the  Commissioner of Police in Cross River, Mr. Sola Sodipo.
Speaking during the hand-over, Kalu said that she changed the roofing of the building, fixed new ceiling sheets, re-painted the building, fixed water installations and windows.
According to her, she spent N400,000 in carrying out the project.
Kalu, who belongs to the Community Development Service (CDS) group on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), said she renovated the police station as part of her CDS to the community.
”I did an NYSC MDGs needs’ assessment in Uwanse Community; as a result, the deteriorating state of the police station was one of the community’s pressing needs.
”I decided to help them in renovating the police station to a better one,” she said.
She said that the Enene Akonjom Foundation supported her financially to ensure the successful completion of the project.
Speaking at the event, Gov. Liyel Imoke of Cross River commended the corps member for her initiative.
Represented by the State Security Adviser, Mr. Rekpene Bassey, the governor called on other corps members to emulate Kalu, adding that she would be rewarded appropriately.
Also speaking, the commissioner of police, lauded the goodwill of Kalu, describing her as a corps member filled with enormous potentials.
”Kalu has changed the situation of the station from an eye sore to a modern police station,” he said.
The Clan Head of Uwanse Community, Mr  Okon Effiom, commended Kalu for the kind gesture.
Effiom revealed that Kalu had carried out a number of projects in the community ranging from introduction of market sanitation to distribution of free mosquito nets, among others.
