Bangladesh's Supreme Court increases the sentence the handed down to an Islamist leader Abdul Kader Mullah, convicted of war crimes from a life term to the death penalty, rejecting his appeal.
In February, Abdul was convicted by a special tribunal of war crimes during the 1971 war of independence with Pakistan.
His conviction and subsequent sentences of other Islamist leaders by the tribunal over the last few months unleashed a war of unrest on the streets pitting supporters of Abdul Mullah's party Jamaat-e- Islami, who accuse the Government of pursuing a political vendetta against pro- Government group.
